Protect Your Car's Finish: Why Detailing is Better Than a Car Wash
Car washes do a lot of unknown damage to your vehicle. Most people do not know about the damages because they aren’t apparent with the naked eye. Main damages include:
- Swirl Marks & Micro-Scratches: The brushes and cloth strips, designed to clean, can act like sandpaper. Dirt particles and debris from hundreds of previous cars get trapped in the rollers, which then rub against your vehicle's paint, causing scratches that are highly visible in sunlight.
- Harsh Cleaning Chemicals: Many automatic car washes use strong, low-pH or high-alkaline detergents to clean cars quickly. These harsh chemicals can strip away your car's wax and paint sealants, leaving the paint exposed to environmental damage.
- Damaged Clear Coat: Over time, the repeated brushing, combined with harsh chemicals, wears down the clear coat, the protective top layer of your paint, which can lead to expensive refinishing bills.
- Improper Drying and Dirty Equipment: Dirt and sand can remain in the towels used for drying, leading to further scratches. Furthermore, old or poorly maintained machines can damage trim, mirrors, and antennas.
- High-Pressure Damage: All car washes use high-pressure water that, while not scratching the paint, can damage rubber seals, strip wax, or damage the paint if used too aggressively.
While touchless car washes are less harmful to your vehicle because of not having brushes they can still seriously harm your vehicles paint with the harsh chemicals and very aggressive pressure washers.
A professional detail offers a deeper, more comprehensive clean, as well as restorative and protective services that a standard car wash does not, resulting in long-term preservation of your vehicle's condition and value.
- Thorough and Meticulous Cleaning: Detailing involves meticulous, hand-done cleaning of every nook and cranny, including door jambs, air vents, and engine bays, which automated washes miss.
- Water Spot Removal: Car washes leave hard water spots (minerals in the water) on vehicle exteriors by not drying them properly. Leaving these minerals on the paint over time get baked in the sun and etch into the clear coat of the vehicle and stay visible on the paint. A detail done by hand washing leaves no water spots on the vehicle and nothing behind to get baked into the clear coat.
- Paint Protection and Restoration: Beyond simply washing, detailing includes processes like the use of a clay bar / mat to remove embedded contaminants and the application of wax, sealants, or ceramic coatings to protect against UV damage, road salt, and contaminants.
- Interior Deep Cleaning: Detailing goes beyond a quick vacuum. Services Include getting into the nooks and crannies that a simple vacuum will not hit, disinfecting surfaces to remove allergens, bacteria, and odors, which improves interior air quality and comfort.
- Improved Driving Safety: Detailing contributes to safety by thoroughly cleaning windows and mirrors to improve visibility and ensuring headlights are clear and bright.
- Long-Lasting Results: The high-quality products and thorough processes used in detailing provide a superior and longer-lasting clean compared to a car wash's temporary results.
- Increased Resale Value: By preserving the vehicle's condition and appearance, regular detailing can help maintain or even increase its resale value, a significant financial advantage over time.
In essence, a car wash is a quick, basic cleaning for routine maintenance, while car detailing is an investment in the longevity, appearance, and overall health of your vehicle.
